Visakhapatnam: Four year old Baby Madhavi from Srikakulam, who was born with deformed left lower limb got a fresh lease of life with a rare surgery conducted by the doctors at the Apollo Hospital here.
She was evaluated at multiple hospitals, but no solution could be obtained. The child was finally shown to Dr Ravi Chandra Vattipalli, an orthopaedic Surgeon at Apollo Hospital by her parents.
She was evaluated using clinical examination, X-rays and MRI in which it was found that her knee cap was lying in an abnormal position, dislocated outwards. Only one similar case has been reported so far in orthopaedic literature, Dr Ravi Chandra said.
Treatment of such complex cases is not straightforward and needs multidisciplinary care. He said in view of the complexity of the case, along with plastic surgeon Dr PRK Prasad, he operated on the child in September, 2022. The child made good recovery, and is now walking without need for any walking aids.
Dr Ravi Chandra stated that success of this surgery was attributed to the excellent team work and coordination from the departments of anesthesia, radiology and nursing team. Apart from the diagnostic challenge, care of the child during and after surgery needed great expertise.
